ALL DAY WORKSHOP
(M1) SUPERVISOR SANITY - FULL DAY WORKSHOP FOR SUPERVISORS AND ASSISTANT SUPERVISORS ONLY
Morning Session: What makes this job so hard? Getting and keeping the right staff. Staff supervision and saying it like it is. What parts of the job you don’t have to do.
Pat Campbell teaches 3 courses in the Daycare Management Certificate at George Brown College and runs her own consulting firm “Caregiver Care’ which delivers on-site training to childcare staff and boards.
(M2) MUSIC CIRCLES INCLUDING THE CHILD WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
This very popular interactive workshop promotes and encourages inclusive and dynamic music circles. Come prepared to participate and have fun.
Joan Hand and Claudine Burrell support children ages 2 - 6 years with a variety of special needs providing assistance to child care staff, parents and the community at large.
(M3) SECRETS OF DISCIPLINE
Learn how to discipline without all the deal-making, the arguments, and the confrontations.
Ron Morrish is the author of Secrets of Discipline, and With All Due Respect. His presentations and workshops have helped countless parents and teachers improve their skills for raising responsible children.
(M4) IMPLEMENTING CURRICULUM CHANGES AND SUCCESS
What transformational curriculum is and the process of the Action Research aspect of introducing a change into a childcare program including how to involve staff and utilize existing skills.
Sally Kotsopoulos has a strong background in High/Scope and has implemented new curriculum at several sites.
(M5) LET’S TALK WITH OUR HANDS: SIGN LANGUAGE FOR PRESCHOOLERS
Participants will have the opportunity to explore how to incorporate Sign Language throughout their preschool programs such as circle, transitions, and learning experiences. You will actively learn signs for familiar songs and games.
Karen Monaghan has a degree in Drama in Education, an ECE, puppetry, and Sign Language training and offers workshops in Sign Language For Preschoolers to ECE students.
(M6) STEP RIGHT UP! THE YOU-DON’T-HAVE-TO-BE-A-DANCER-TO-TEACH-DANCE WORKSHOP!
Learn some simple folk dances to share with toddlers or school-agers by taking advantage of children’s natural curiosity about their world, and providing a tangible connection to other cultures.
Pat Beaven leads workshops, and writes regularly on dance for publications such as Performing Arts and Entertainment, The Toronto Star and Urban Mozaik.
(M7) PREPARING NUTRITIOUS SNACKS AND MEALS
This workshop will cover basic nutrition and D.N.A. requirements as well as planning easy but nutritious meals and snacks, servings and presentation of food and food activities to do with children.
Karen Bijai has been featured in Canadian Living Magazine and Canadian Living T.V.
(M8) MAGICAL OUTDOOR PLAYSPACES
This interactive workshop will explore the endless possibilities for creating magical play-based environments.
Lynn Wilsoni is a coordinator of the ECE program at George Brown College.
AFTERNOON WORSHOPS (2:00 P.M.)
ALL DAY WORKSHOP - SUPERVISOR SANITY - FULL DAY WORKSHOP FOR SUPERVISORS AND ASSISTANT SUPERVISORS ONLY
Afternoon Session: Communication basics. Connecting well with parents, performance evaluations that work, handling your Board, relations with government agencies, keeping your face in the community for support and information.
(A2) PROVIDING A MOTIVATING ENVIRONMENT FOR STAFF
How to ensure that your child care centre is one that has a motivating environment, one that provides the staff with the motivation to be the best they can be for the children and for themselves!
Anne MacIver is an ECE with more than 20 years in the field and leads workshops in a variety of topics.
(A3) RESOURCE CENTRE TOUR
Participants will be shuttled to the Umbrella office for a tour of the Umbrella Resource centre.
Birgit Stevens is the Umbrella Membership Coordinator. Sacha Clarke-Squair is Umbrella’s Childcare Coordinator
(A4) CHILDREN NEED MUSIC
This workshop offers many practical examples of rhymes, songs, finger plays and games as well as activities for listening, movement, and instruments. No musical training needed!
Susan Bliss Purdy teaches “Music With Your Baby” and “Preparatory Music” at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.
(A5) DANCE THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE - MULTICULTURAL DANCE WORKSHOP
Participants will take part in spontaneous and imaginative musical stories and movements inspired from a very multicultural mix: African, First Nations, Spanish, Asian, and European.
Donna Bartkiw is an ECE and has an extensive background in music, dance and theatre.
(A6) EMERGING WITH EMERGENT CURRICULUM: THE PROJECT APPROACH
This interactive workshop will help answer the questions you have about emergent curriculum and the project approach.
Diane Kashin is a professor at Seneca College in ECE and a part time Early Years consultant for JUS of Greater Toronto.
(A7) CREATING A YOUTH FRIENDLY PROGRAM (WORKING WITH 9 - 12 YEAR OLDS)
This workshop will focus on creating a school age program where 9-12 year olds take ownership for planning “their” program, however, these ideas can be adapted to the younger school age children as well.
Holly Gerrits currently oversees the operation of 62 before and after school programs in London.
