Keynote - Pat Campbell - 9:00 a.m.

So many child care workers are tired of being seen as glorified babysitters!  Pat Campbell's address will give some clear directions to help find the support, resources, energy and enthusiasm it takes to make the job really enjoyable.

 

MORNING WORKSHOPS - 10:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.

 

M1 - SECRETS OF DISCIPLINE.  Tired of bargaining with children just to get a little cooperation and frustrated by their lack of respect?  In this workshop you will learn to discipline without deal-making, arguments and confrontations.  RON MORRISH is an educator and consultant and the author of Secrets of Discipline and With All Due Respect.  (This workshop is also offered in the afternoon - A17)

 

M2. - INFANT/TODDLER DEVELOPMENT.  Covers areas such as sensory language, gross motor skills and includes "make and take" materials.  DENISE MELANSON, Wintergreen Communications.

 

M3 - ALL AGES MUSIC AND MOVEMENT.  Interactive workshop singing songs for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school age.  Includes creative movement experiences and use of instruments.  TURKEY RHUBARB are children's music entertainers who have performed extensively in Ontario.

 

M4 - INTRODUCTION TO HIGH/SCOPE CURRICULUM.  Examines how the day is set out, how children interact with peers and teachers and the role of parents.  MOYA FEWSON is a certified teacher for the High/Scope curriculum.

 

M5 - PROMISING PROGRAM PLANS.  Create innovative activities and program plans.  Offers two different approaches to planning, focusing on the drama centre and storytelling.  HEATHER KIELY and NICOLE MULLIGAN.

 

M6 - GOING TO NEW PLACES - FRESH IDEAS FOR YOUR BACKPACK.  Intended for staff who have been in the field for more than 5 years and feel that they are losing their enthusiasm, interest and energy.  PAT CAMPBELL is a therapist, early childhood and family life educator.  She is also this year's keynote speaker.

 

M7 - BIAS FREE CREATIONS.  Interactive workshop which will help you create interesting, inclusive, accessible and fun activities for all children which can be taken back to the classroom environment.  KAREN SAUNDERS and ALLISON PRENTICE have worked in the childcare field for over 20 years.

 

M8 - TEMPERAMENTS.  Participants will be actively involved in learning about temperaments and discussing ways to modify environments, approaches and activities to meet the needs of different temperaments.  LINDA PIPE is an instructor in the ECE program at Loyalist College.

 

M9 - THE ACTIVITY GOURMET STRIKES AGAIN!  For school age professionals.  Make and take activities, crafts and ideas to be used throughout the year.  CORA-LEE BLACK is the winner of the 1999 Noel Young Award from S.A.C.A.O.

 

AFTERNOON WORKSHOPS - 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.

 

A10 - BEYOND "USE YOUR WORDS" - ADVANCED GUIDANCE STRATEGIES FOR PRESCHOOLERS.  Explore practical guidelines, examples and theoretical rationale for conflict resolutions that work.  TRICIA DUMAIS and CAROLYN CRUM work with young children at Sunnybrook Crèche, a workplace child care centre.

 

A11 - BEEN THERE!  DONE THAT!  SO WHY DO I NEED TO GO TO DAY CARE?  Focuses on creating environments that cultivate independence and resourcefulness in older school age children.  Looks at program structure, expectations, programming, community involvement and breaking the tie for those who have come of age to leave care.  GAIL HUNTER and LUCY PATTERSON are in the ECE Department of George Brown College.

 

A12 - UMBRELLA RESOURCE CENTRE TOUR.  Participants will be shuttled to the Umbrella office and receive a full demonstration of the accu-cut machine and an opportunity to browse through the many resources Umbrella has to offer its members.  BIRGIT STEVENS and SACHA CLARKE-SQUAIR are coordinators with Umbrella Central Day Care Services.

 

A13 - REACHING OUT TO PARENTS.  This workshop will introduce participants to Invest In Kids Foundation, review a poll of Canadian parents completed by IKF and identify tools and strategies centre-based staff can use to reach out to parents, inform parents about child development and use materials within a parent education context.  CHAYA KULKARNI is Director of Programs and Training at Invest In Kids Foundation.

 

A14 - STRESS MANAGEMENT FOR CHILD CARE STAFF.  Explores the common causes of stress and burnout and some ways of dealing with them effectively.  Self awareness and self examination will be the focus.  ANNE MacIVER is an ECE with more than 20 years in the field.

 

A15 - ANTI-BIAS CURRICULUM - WHAT IT IS AND WHAT IT IS NOT!  Explore the importance of the physical and social environment in delivering an anti-bias curriculum.  Examine which activities, displays and interactions support anti-bias learning and behaviours.  VALERIE RHOMBERG is a Coordinator at the Institute of Early Development, Mothercraft (Toronto).

 

A16 - MUSIC CIRCLES.  Interactive workshop which will teach ECE's simple and fun ways to include children with special needs in their circles.  Includes props, picture symbols and helpful strategies.  JOAN HAND and CLAUDINE BURRELL have been teaching in the special needs field for approximately 15 years.
